Help

The photos as displayed in the photo library are 400-pixel x 600-pixel JPEG files — a resolution suitable for most web publishing, electronic-presentation uses and initial print design. However, this resolution is generally too low for most end-print needs larger than three inches on the long dimension.

When viewing a 400-pixel x 600-pixel display file, you can save and download the low-res image to your computer using one of the following approaches. Please make sure to save the display version, rather than the smaller-image thumbnail graphic.

  • While hovering your computer’s cursor over the display photo, left-click and hold your computer’s mouse, and then drag the highlighted image to your computer’s desktop (Mac or PC).
  • While hovering your computer’s cursor over the display photo, right-click your computer’s mouse to activate a pop-up menu. Then select “save image as” from the pop-up menu to download the file to a location on your computer (Mac or PC).
  • While hovering your computer’s cursor over the display photo, hold down the control key on your keyboard and left-click your computer’s mouse to activate a pop-up menu. Then select “save image as” from the pop-up menu to download the file to a location on your computer (Mac only).

Each digital photo has embedded metadata, including a photo caption, credit and source information.

High-resolution digital versions of photos displayed in the photo library are available for university-related publication and personal use at the cost of $15 per file. Requests typically require a turnaround time of two business days. Delivery of digital files is typically handled either by email attachment (best for three or fewer images) or by download via a link to our secure online server. Expenses can be billed directly to a UW-Madison departmental UDDS number or paid by check. We are not able to accept cash or credit-card transactions.

To request high-res files, please email photos@uc.wisc.edu with photo library image ID numbers and/or the photo’s original filename. Please include a brief summary describing the context of use for the photo(s) and your contact information.

High-res photo requests from news and media organizations reporting information about UW-Madison are typically provided free of charge and fulfilled the same day, if possible.

For visual content of the UW-Madison campus and its people from earlier decades, University Communications also manages a collection of photography in film, print and slide formats that dates back to 1990. For queries related to these images, please contact photographer Bryce Richter at (608) 262-7411 or brichter2@wisc.edu.

In addition, UW-Madison Archives is a great resource for historical photographs of UW-Madison and its people prior to 1990. Its services include management of original negatives and prints from the former UW-Madison News and Information Services and the former UW-Extension Photo Media Service.
